From November 1895, Cézanne rented a large country house where he worked on landscapes and on the motif of the quarry of Bibémus.

"He has rented a small house at the quarries of the dam, and spends most of the time there".

(letter from Coste to Zola, 1896).

"My dear Solari, you will be free on Sunday, and if you wish, you may join us for the lunch at the Tholonet, at the Berne restaurant. if you come in the morning, at about 8 o'clock you will find me near the quarry where you were studying when you came the time before last".

(Letter to Solari, The Tholonet, end of August 1897)
